The Attributes of God
By: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Jawzi
Translated by: Abdullah bin Hamid 'Ali
Paperback 169 Pages
Daf' Shubah al-Tashbh is a critique, censure, and refutation of the historical anthropomorphic leanings of some of the Hanbali scholars and learned. At the same time, it is a vindication of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal from the accusations of the anthropomorphism as well as the claim by some Hanbalis, that he adopted anthropomorphic beliefs, similar to theirs. Unmistakably, this work is a polemical commentary on the problematic Qur'anic verses and hadiths that fall under the mutashabih (allegorical and ambiguous) Qur'anic verses and prophetic traditions composed by the author, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH), the author of the well-acclaimed book, Talbis Iblis (The Devils' Deception).
Unlike other books of this genre, this book is significant in that Ibn al-Jawzi offers an incisive critique of scholars of his own school, for which in return, Ibn al-Jawzi was criticised by those Hanbali and Hanbali-leaning proponents. Our Price: $23.99

The Content of Character : Ethical Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad
By: Shaykh Al-Amin Ali Mazrui
Translated by: Shaykh Hamza Yusuf
Hardback 76 pages
As a scholar, Shaykh Al-Amin Mazrui attempted to be a bridge between Islam and modernity. He argued that while Christianity became the vanguard of progress when it became more secular and less Christian, Islam was the vanguard of progress when it was more Islamic and less secular. According to Shaykh Al-Amin, progress among Muslims required not the abandonment of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment. Shaykh Al-Amin's choice of these favored sayings of the Prophet (pbuh) in "The Content of Character" --translated and introduced here by the well-known American Muslim scholar Hamza Yusuf -- was influenced by his effort to be a bridge--builder, especially between the values of tradition and the norms of modernity, between the wisdom of religion and the compassion of humanity.
Contains original Arabic text of hadiths as well.

The Differences of the Imams

The Differences of the Imams
By Shaykh al-Hadith Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi
Translated by Mawlana Muhammad Kadwa
If the Imams of the four schools [madhahib] established all of their rulings from the Qur’an and the Sunna, why have they differed on so many points? How can two authentic narrations from the Messenger of Allah appear to contradict one another? When is it acceptable for Muslims to differ over religious matters? What did the Messenger mean when he said, “The differences of my Umma are a source of mercy?”
Using examples from the Messenger of Allah , his Companions, and their Followers, The Differences of the Imams answers these puzzling questions in a thorough and concise manner. In a clear and lucid style, the author illustrates the various ways in which different narrations seem to contradict one another and how the Companions and the Imams of jurisprudence have reconciled these apparent differences. This work is an excellent resource for anyone seeking to better understand some of the deeper issues of hadith and jurisprudence: how these two disciplines come together to form the basis of Islamic law [Shari'a], why it is necessary to follow a school of Islamic law, and what the basic principles of hadith scholarship are.
